The Families Moving Forward (FMF) Program is an approach specifically designed to address the needs of families raising children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).
FMF is an evidence-based intervention, specifically for families and children with FASDs. It can be used as a stand-alone intervention or concurrently, in addition to other therapeutic interventions. The consultation model provides education, guidance, and coaching strategies to caregivers/ parents, and families who care for individuals with FASD who struggle with complex, lifelong learning and behavioral challenges.
Using a neurobehavioral approach, parents/caregivers increase their understanding that their child's challenges rather than intentional noncompliance and they are able to develop new skills and strategies that change the environment and reduce challenging behavior. The aim of FMF is to restore hope and optimism to families whose child is faced with complex developmental needs. Parents increase confidence and self-efficacy in parenting, and their child benefits from co-regulation and a supportive environment and improved overall well-being which reduces the chances for future secondary disabilities.
